Early Childhood
Devin Owens was born in Los Angeles, California. His father, Mike, was a very famous lawyer in the Los Angeles area. His mother, Candace, was a nurse at the Los Angeles county general hospital. Devin was the couple’s first child, and obviously he received a lot of attention because of it. Devin was born into a very wealthy family. Right off the bat Devin was spoiled as his mother quit her job after giving birth so she could spend all her time with him. His aunts and uncles would also give him just about anything he could ever want. As a result, Devin had no interest in playing with other kids. He preferred to just keep to himself and take in all the attention that his family could give him.
Devin was born in Los Angeles, California
However, when Devin was five, everything changed. His mother gave birth to her second child, Devin’s brother Terrell. At first, Devin liked having a little brother because he was fun to have around. Devin’s parents let him help out getting things for Terrell. However, after the initial happiness wore off, Devin got depressed. He realized that he didn’t have everyone’s undivided attention and his brother was “stealing” it from him. It made Devin jealous and angry that everyone was paying no attention to him any more and they were all focused of his brother. To get the attention back onto himself, Devin would constantly do the wrong things just so his parents would notice him. That’s when his parents got tired of this kind of Devin and his dad started to teach Devin about basketball. His dad was a All Star basketball player for the Boston Celtics before he retired.
That was when his love for sports began. Devin’s dad bought him a little basketball ball hoop and at first he had no idea what it was for. After his dad got it in the hoop, Devin would try to do the same. He was pretty good for a seven year old. Devin was just excited that his dad was now giving him more attention then his brother. Because Devin was getting the attention he always wanted, he would play basketball constantly. The feeling continued into football as well. Matt really felt that if he was playing a sport, he could get whatever he wanted.
Devin would always be around a basketball
Once again, things changed when Devin was ten. His mother went back to work and he was forced to go to after school programs because nobody would be home to take care of him. At that point, Devin had begun to go outside and play with other kids. He had really started to excel at basketball but he was no longer going to be able to play with his friends because he had to stay after school instead of going home. Devin didn’t react well, and he repeatedly threatened to run away from home because of it. At this point, he wasn’t rebelling because of a lack of attention, but because he wasn’t able to keep doing what he loved to do.
Devin eventually got what he wanted when his parents signed him up for the local basketball league at the local gym. Devin was placed on a bad team because he was new and nobody knew how good of a player he was. This made him sad, but he then thought that he was going to go out there and show everyone that he was the best player. He did not disappoint himself at all. In 15 games he averaged 23 points per game, 9 rebounds per game and 10 assists per game. They were very surprised, and his team was very happy, Devin enjoyed a lot of success in basketball league, and he even brought his team to the state championship game in the travel basketball league. Like on the court, Devin was doing great in school. He was on the honor roll and he was also getting a lot of praise from his teachers. It was obvious that Matt had a bright future ahead of him; he had a great combination of academic and athletic success.
High School
Devin began high school at Catholic Memorial High School because he was awarded a full scholarship. His mother and father were really proud of him and they both wanted him to take full advantage of it. In his freshman year at Catholic Memorial, Devin tried out for the basketball team but encountered a big problem. The coach of the team’s son was a freshman as well, and a point guard. Also, Devin’s father had a history of problems with the father, so that influenced his decision on who to pick for the team and made sure that his son’s friends, who weren’t as talented as Devin, were picked ahead of Devin. Instead of playing basketball, Devin had nothing to do after school and began getting into trouble with friends. He eventually began slacking in his schoolwork because all he cared about was hanging out with his friends and having a good time. At the end of his freshman year, Devin received bad news. He had let his grades slip below the requirement for his scholarship and if he wanted to stay in St Peters, he would have to begin paying the standard tuition. His parents agreed that they weren’t going to pay for school when Devin had a chance for a free education and threw it away for having a good time with his friends.

His sophomore year, Devin started school at Oak Bluffs High School. His first reaction of the school was that it was more like the type of school he was used to. Until St Peters, Devin had always attended public school and felt much more comfortable in that environment. Luckily, most of his friends from intermediate school went to his high school so he had no problem adjusting. Unfortunately, Devin got a very sick the week of basketball tryouts and was unable to play for the team. He was still playing in the local travel league but the league just didn’t have the level of competition Devin needed to improve. Devin now knew that he really didn’t have a chance to play basketball as he had missed the tryouts. He now had just school and nothing to do again. Then one day, while Devin was getting into school. The football coach looked at Devin and asked him if he had ever played football. Devin told him no and he really didn’t know anything about it. The coach told him that he would be a great fit at wide receiver on the team as he had great height at 6’4 as junior and he had great hands as he had seen Devin practicing after school with friends playing basketball. The next day, Devin stayed after school and went to the coach’s office. The coach introduced Devin to the team. Devin was already very strong so he had no problem working out with the team. Devin was going to be part of a average wide receiving corps and he was going to be the go to wide receiver. One, of the other receivers was Kevin Johnson. He was a average player. They had become great friends and the day before the first game of the season, Kevin and Devin were walking back to the dorm room. In a second a car pulled up, fired some shots out the window and drove off. Luckily, none of them had hit Devin, but one had hit his best friend right in the lung. His friend died instantly and he didn’t know what to do. The next day was the first game, it was very emotional for the whole campus but was very hard for Devin. He always wanted to be number 1 but he changed his number to 17 for his best friend. That day, Devin had a huge performance with 13 catches for 245 yards and 3 touchdowns. Devin dedicated his performance to his best friend and he later that day went to his funeral. Over the course of the season Devin had huge numbers with 121 catches for 2,378 yards and a amazing 33 touchdowns. Scouts were now looking at Devin to be the top prospect in the whole recruiting class as 6 months before nobody knew who he was. Devin them received a full scholarship to USC to play for the perennial powerhouse USC Trojans and great coach Pete Carroll.

The university of Southern California was where Devin really got his name thrown out there. Devin started all four years at USC as the number one receiver. He was a great team player and also a great leader for the Trojans. The fans also loved him and so did his coach. Devin just stayed on his rage of huge numbers. In his four years at USC he had broken every receiving record. He also had broken almost every NCAA record also. He had a total of 732 receptions for 9,491 yards and a 87 touch downs. Those are amazing numbers. Devin also had speed which helped him be a huge success in the return game as well. In the return game he had over 3,550 yards and 22 touchdowns. Devin had big play capability every time he touched the ball. Devin brought his Trojan team to the Championship game against SEC Champs LSU Tigers. Devin was very determined to bring the trophy back to his school. He had a rough game with only 4 catches for 87 yards but he had the game winning touchdown reception as time expired. Devin was now a very high ranked player on Mel Kiper Jr’s draft board. They had him going number one overall to the Miami Dolphins. A few days before the draft, Devin was in trouble for receiving 'benefits” from organizations and sponsors. Devin them had to be taken out of the draft and he was furious.

FSJ
After missing out on his chance to play football in the National Football League, Devin decided it was time to move on with his life. He found a great developmental league, the FSJ. The FSJ was a league full of players who had the skills to play in the NFL but were all passed over for one reason or another. Devin was entering into the league during the leagues 7th season and 2nd week. As soon as he entered the league, he was very highly scouted by Adam Simms. He is the GM of the Tampa Bay Rolling Thunder. Devin then signed with the rolling thunder with a 3 million unrestricted free agent draft money on a one year contract with 5 million in TT. Simms, felt like Devin was everything that he wanted on his team and was worth the money. Devin is happy right now and ready to make a impact int he receiving corps as he can turn a team into a powerhouse by himself and he can be a great team player and a leader. He also feels like he could help with the management of the team if they need him. Devin just wants to bring a championship to the Tampa Bay Rolling Thunder and he feels that he can get the right guys around him and they can have a huge chance at this.
