Part 1: History of Pythons: Greatest Game
Season 5, Week 1: Oklahoma City Pythons @ St. Joseph Playboys
The start of season 5 brought high hopes and championship expectations for both of these teams. The Pythons loaded up in the past off-season and the Playboys returned the core of their Season 4 championship team, looking to be the first team in FSJ sim league history to repeat.
A lot of pre-game chatter occured, mostly consisted of the commish yelling at the Playboys new Co-GM for not PMing him the playbooks. However, after 6 long pages of nonsense, the game was set to go and two league powerhouses were set to kick off Season 5 in a game that eerily foreshadowed the season for both teams.
The game began with the Pythons receiving the ball and right out of the gate they attack with a play-action pass to Matty Smith who was not going to be taken down easily. He breaks loose from an all-pro Liam McNasty tackle, makes Tambo Madison miss, and eventually Woody Avalon takes him down at the Playboys 36 for a huge gain and a huge start to the season.
The very next play: Richard Smeltzer beats Tambo Madison deep, and new-pythons QB Bam Risso lobs it over Madison's head right into Smeltzer's hands in the endzone. Two plays, 1 Touchdown. Pythons take a 7-0 lead
The Playboys attempt to counter-strike by feeding the ball to the former Python Ben Mott. Every play on this drive that picks up yardage goes to Mott. Unfortunatly, his 41 rushing yards and 7 receiving yards were not enough to punch it in the endzone, and the Playboys settle for a 41 yard-FG thanks to a 3rd down deflection in the endzone by newly-acquired safety Adam Simms.
Up 7-3 early, the Pythons continue to attack the vaunted Playboys secondary. The very first play on the drive, Risso drops back without any pressure on him, pump fakes, then fires a rocket deep to Richard Smeltzer who burns Tambo Madison for a 2nd time, this time for an 82 yard reception!
Up 14-3 with still over 2 minutes left in the first quarter, the Pythons have a firm control of the game early on. Playboys Co-GM was on the sidelines showing his displeasure and frustration with Tambo's performance proclaiming "FUCK it.. Tambo's playing WR next game".
After Mott picks up 5 yards, and Pythons all-pro CB Johnny Brunxa knocks loose a 3rd down pass to Charlie Rice the Playboys punt the ball and the Pythons retain posession. After yet another long reception, this time form Alex Irvin, the Pythons have the ball inside the Playboys 25. Risso drops back and fires to Irvin in the Endzone, but the coverage is too good and Woody Avalon makes the easy interception in the endzone that keeps the Playboys in the game.
The Playboys proceed to go 3 and out, and then the 2 teams trade Interceptions(One by Troy Woodson and then one by Johnny Brunxa).
After the Pythons drive down the field and miss a 48-yard FG, the Playboys take over, needing a spark and DJ Johnson delivers with a 43 yard bomb reception over the beast known as Adrian Wilson. The missed FG could've put the Pythons up by 14 and put the Playboys in much worse field position, but it ends up a 7 point-swing and 14-10. The Playboys are back in it
After a few drives that go nowhere, the Playboys get the ball with under 30 seconds left with the ball from their own 29, looking to attack the Pythons defense and get into FG range for a quick-score before half. Unfortunatly for the Pythons... It turned into much more than that. Another deep pass to DJ Johnson over the head of Adrian Wilson puts the Playboys inside the Pythons 10 yard line with 21 seconds left in the half.
Now the Playboys are thinking differently. They are set-up to go into the half with the lead rather than kicking a FG and being down by 1. The Playboys call the perfect play and QB Toby Parker hit's DJ Johnson once again for a 7-yard TD on an out route that took him to the side of the endzone.
The once-dominant Python lead took a horrific turn at the hands of DJ Johnson, and the Playboys head into the half up 17-14.
Coming out of the half, the Playboys get the ball, but eventually are forced to punt where the Pythons take over at their own 26. After 2 completions for 31 yards, the Pythons appeared to be back on a roll and rady to take back the lead that was once theirs.
Playboys GM/CB Jesse James had other plans.
On the very next play, James shows his hops and grabs the pick from his place in the zone, preventing another completion to an appeared-to-be open Alex Irvin. Buster Move managed to make the stop at the Pythons 26 yard line, that eventually set the Playboys up for 3 more points, extending their lead to 20-14, and further deflating the sprit of many Pythons after such a hot start.
Later on in the 3rd quarter, after a couple score-less drives, the Pythons look to make up lost ground, but Bam Risso does nothing but put them into an even deeper hole.
Liam McNasty decides to match Jesse James, and then some, intercepting a horrible Risso-Zack Dorow intended pass and dances all the way to the endzone. After starting off scoring 2 touchdowns in 3 plays, and being up 14-3, the Pythons offense came to a complete halt.
The third quarter ends on that play, with the Pythons now down 27-14, and in need of something to get them going. The Pythons take the ball from their own 30 to start off the 4th quarter and start off their hopeful comeback, trying to ride the arm of the 5'10" Bam Risso. He starts off throwing a 31 yard pass to Matty Smith, and a few other double-digit yardage strikes and leads them down to the Playboys 3 yard line.
1st and GL: Move runs to the right side, but only manages to get back to the line
2nd and GL: Risso looks for Smeltzer in the EZ, but incomplete
3rd and GL: Move takes the handoff to the right, picks up 2 just short of the goalline
4th and GL from the 1 Yard Line.
Bam Risso drops back, down by 2 TD's on a critical play of the game...
SACKED! by a CPU linemen. 4th and GL and Risso doesn't even get a pass off!
Playboys receive the ball with about 4 minutes left on the clock and remain ahead 27-14. The Pythons have yet to score since their third play of the game. Their hopes are diwndling down, when fan-favorite all-pro all time python interception leader Johnny Brunxa does what he does best!
Interception!
Johnny Brunxa breathes life into this Pythons team! Could this be a sign of good fortune to come?
Bam Risso and the Pythons offense take the field. This could be the time Risso breaks his legacy and begins his time with the Pythons as a savior. The people of Oklahoma City have been aching for years for a QB to come through and replace Peyton "Big Game" Brady. Is Bam Risso the next lovable Doug Flutie?
He completes a pass to Alex Irvin down the sideline, giving the Pythons the ball inside the 10, when the unthinkable happens.
Bam Risso drops back on first and goal and fires to the 5 Million Dollar man Alex Irvin. Ironically, the Playboys jacked up the price for Irvin in the off-season and the Pythons were forced to spend much more than the veteran minimum Irvin was expected to receive.
Irvin leans in to make the reception in the back of the endzone, but, either a sudden gust of wind took the ball of course or Irvin extremely mis-judged where the ball was going to be placed and it hits him on the side of the head!
And it falls right into the hands of Troy Woodson for his 2nd pick of the day, and Bam Risso's 5th INT thrown!
The Pythons defense seems frustrated at this time with the offense, with Ken Sady leading the charge cussing out Bam Risso for all his INT's
The Playboys get the ball at the 20 and all they need to do is run the clock out with just above 2 mintues left. But Johnny Brunxa, Wilber Davis, and Javon Biggz all make consecutive stops to force a 3 and out and the Playboys are forced to punt, STILL up 27-14.
Adrian Wilson returns the punt to the Pythons 33 with under 2 minutes remaining.
Bam Risso fires a deep pass to Matty Smith for a gain of 42
Fires to Matty Smith again for a gain of 16
Fires to Buster Move down the sideline who drags Woody Avalon into the Endzone!
Pythons make the XP and are now down 27-21
DJ Johnson and Ben Mott run on the field and start mouthing with the Pythons
"We're still winning though"-DJ Johnson
"cough...Scoreboard...cough"- Ben Mott
Still down by 6, it appears the Pythons will need to get the onside kick to still have a chance, but Playboys WR Charlie Rice falls on it. Playboys ball! With 1:06 remaining!
Mott runs the ball to the right, picks up 2 yards. Sady makes the stop.
Mott runs to the left, and picks up 5 yards. Simms makes the stop.
Then, the Playboys make a move that will come back to haunt them in the end. 3rd and 3, They decide to take a knee rather than try and run for the first down. The Pythons use their final Timeout and the Playboys punt the ball. Touchback. 20 Seconds remaining.
1st and 10..It's the final time for Bam Risso to make up for his 5 Interception day. The offense, sturggled all day with him at the reign.
He Drops back... SACKED.. Hurry up back to the line
2nd down and 16... Risso looks for Buster Move .. Incomplete...
It's 3rd down.. Gets the snap off with 1 Seconds remaining.. Need to go 84 yards on this one final play.
Risso drops back and fires to Chris Jones. Jones was also acquired in the off-season and played backup TE and slot WR. But this day, he became something much more than just a backup. He became a legend.
"Complete to JONES!!!!!!!!!! Gets a block from Smith
AND
HES
GONE!!!!!!!!!!!!"
Woody Avalon looks on as he gets burned for the game-losing TD.
The Pythons did the unthinkable. Down by 2 Touchdowns with under 2 minutes to go, they come back and win without even recovering an onside-kick. Truely a classic game, and one that really kicked off season 5 in an amazing way.
The game ended with Bam Risso breaking the passing yardage record with 507 yards, and 4 different Python receviers surpassed the 100 yard mark(Alex Irvin, Matty Smith, Chris Jones, and Richard Smeltzer)
Defensively for the Pythons Wilber Davis led a strong run defense with 9 tackles(3 TFL) that held all-pro RB Ben Mott to under 3 yards per carry. While Johnny Brunxa recorded the teams only 2 turnovers, picking off 2 Toby Parker passes.
After the game some beautiful words were said by Playboys RB Ben Mott, who'd just recently trash-talked his former team. "ARE YOU FUCKING SHITTING ME??!!! GODMOTHERFUCKING DAMNIT SONUVABITCH MOTHAFUCKA FUCK NIGGA!!!! "
Thank you for tuning in to the History of the Pythons Part 1. Stay tuned for Part 2 soon!
